  Shimon Shetreet was born in Morocco in 1946, and immigrated to Israel as a child.

Shetreet received a law degree from the Hebrew University, and later a D.C.L. from the University of Chicago. He has filled many academic appointments in Hebrew University as well as in universities abroad.

Shetreet has served as a member of various public committees on legal matters, including the Landau Commission on the Israeli Court System, and the Council for Administrative Courts. He has been the Secretary of the Council for Public Justice, Chairman of the Committee on the Broadcasting Authority Law, a member of the plenum of the Israel Broadcasting Authority (1984-87), the Chairman of International Conferences on Legal Matters, and a member of the Board of Directors of Bank Leumi. Today he is as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Afro-Asian Institute of the Histadrut.

As a Member of the Knesset since 1988, Shetreet has served on the Committees on Finance, State Audit, and Constitution, Law and Justice (1988-92).

His publications include numerous books and articles on legal matters.

From 1992-1996 he served as Minister of Religious Affairs.
