Marwan Bin Khatib Barghouti, of Ramallah, is head of the Fatah Tanzim and founder of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, groups responsible for many terror attacks during the past two years. He was arrested on April 14, 2002 in the course of Operation Defensive Shield.

Barghouti is to be tried in an Israeli criminal court on a specific list of charges related to his terrorist activity. The charge sheet is based on direct evidence from senior terrorists who operated under Barghouti's command, and on documents confiscated from Barghouti's office during Operation Defensive Shield.

The trial opened on Thursday, September 5, 2002. Barghouti is charged with murder, aiding and abetting murder, promoting murder, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and being an active member of a terrorist organization. The case will be heard by Tel-Aviv District Court President Sara Serota and Judges Avraham Tal and Dr. Amiram Binyamini.
