  Elyakim Rubinstien


  Elyakim Rubinstein, born in Tel Aviv in 1947, is married and the father of four. He served in the IDF and received a B.A. (1967), LL.B. (1969) and M.A. (1974, magna cum laude) from Hebrew University. With a distinguished public career, he has been influential in shaping the peace treaties both with Egypt and with Jordan.

1977-1979 Member of the Israeli delegation to peace talks with Egypt, leading to the signing of the Camp David Accords and the Peace Treaty between the two states
1980 Assistant Director-General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the bureau for the normalization of relations with Egypt
1981-1985 Legal Advisor and Assistant Director-General for Special Duties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
1982 Received personal rank of ambassador
1985-1986 Minister, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Israel, Washington

Government Secretary, serving also as:
  • Chairman of the committee coordinating Israeli cooperation with US congressional committees and the independent counsel in the Iran-Contras investigation (1987-89)
  • Chairman of the team negotiating the US-Israel Memorandum of Agreement, institutionalizing cooperation between the countries (1988)
  • Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Dangerous Drugs (1987-88)
  • Member of the Atomic Energy Commission (1987-95)
  • Chairman of the Interagency Forum for Monitoring Anti-Semitism (1988-94)
  • 1991 Member of the negotiating team which established the framework for the peace negotiations that began at the Madrid Conference, and member of the Israeli delegation to the Madrid Peace Conference
    1991-1993 Chairman of the Israeli delegation for negotiations with the Jordanian-Palestinian delegation
    1993-1994 Chairman of the Israeli delegation for negotiations with Jordan, which formulated the 1994 peace treaty signed between the two states
    1993-1994 Member of the Steering Committee of the multilateral talks
    1994-1995 Legal Advisor to the Defense Ministry
    1995-1997 Judge in the Jerusalem District Court
    1997-2003 Attorney-General
    May 2004 Appointed Supreme Court Justice

    Mr. Rubinstein has authored books and articles on Israel's Supreme Court, the history of government in Israel, the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the peace process.
