In "The Ethics of the Fathers," one of the many works included in the
Talmud, the rabbinic elaboration of the teachings of the Bible, 40 is
described as the Age of Understanding. What do we understand at age 40?
MASHAV, established in 1958, at 40, is setting its sights on the future.
These past four decades of cooperation with the developing world have
meant professionalism and dedication, a real desire to share know how,
stimulating instruction and spirited learning, and enough idealism and
focus to sustain and motivate us in decades to come.
In this issue of Shalom Magazine you will read about development in its
various forms, about alternative strategies for income generation and
intercultural learning environments, the international group from the
Development Study Centre which went to Egypt to work with farmers on a
project to further rural regional development in Nubaria, Israeli eye
doctors in Africa, and the fruitful careers of MASHAV experts.
In all this, understanding is essential to the learning process,
understanding where we have been, where we are now and where we are
going. We must understand what is relevant and sustainable, what are our
strengths and limitations, what is necessary for the vital future of
international development cooperation.

Joan Hooper
