In Israel it is the autumn season as I send this issue of Shalom Magazine 1998-3 to the printer. This week is the start of the High Holidays for the Jewish citizens of Israel: Rosh Hashana (the New Year), Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), Sukkot (the Ingathering of the Harvest or the Feast of Tabernacles) and Simhat Torah (marking the completion of the annual cycle of readings of the Five Books of Moses [the Bible], and its immediate recommencement).

It is a time of change and introspection. At the corner market summer fruit changes to winter fruit. We get out our winter clothes and wait for the rainy season to quench our arid earth which hasn't seen water (unless it was irrigated!) since April. All the world's religions mark seasonal changes and inner changes in people. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, read during Sukkot services in synagogues worldwide, expresses Jewish acknowledgement of these rhythms.

To everything there is a season
and a time to every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to uproot,
A time to kill and a time to heal,
A time to tear down and a time to build up,
A time to weep and a time to laugh,
A time to mourn and a time to dance,
A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together,
A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
A time to seek and a time to lose,
A time to keep and a time to cast away,
A time to rend and a time to sew,
A time to be silent and a time to speak,
A time to love and a time to hate,
A time for war and a time for peace.

Let's work to plant, build up and speak, and for a time, too, for communication and exchange, cooperation and development, harmony and friendship.

Your Editor,
Ms. Joan Hooper
