MASHAV is proud of its extensive training program. MASHAV training has a uniquely wide range of both subjects and language of instruction. In 2000, a total of 4,252 participants attended 158 training courses in Israel or participated in individual study tours and various graduate and post-graduate programs. Of these courses, 55 were single-country programs tailor-made for specific countries. In addition, 139 on-the-spot courses were held in 52 countries.

MASHAV's training program extends throughout the developing world, encompassing over 130 partner countries and the Palestinian Authority. Particular emphasis has been given to training of participants from the Middle East and North Africa. In the year 2000, 1,128 trainees from this region participated in MASHAV courses, most of which were taught in Arabic.

MASHAV's training program benefits from the following advantages:

  • a network of a dozen MASHAV-affiliated study centers and academic and professional institutions, providing high-level facilities and expert instruction for courses both in Israel and abroad.

  • access to Israeli policy-makers, academics and professionals, with experience in many fields of particular importance to the developing world, ranging from combat of desertification to disaster management.

  • use of the Israeli experience of development over its 50 years of existence as a model of instruction.

  • a highly polyglot population providing expert instruction in participants' own languages.

Numerous international organizations, NGOs and donor countries have taken advantage of MASHAV's unique training program, sponsoring or co-funding with MASHAV trainees from their partner countries. These organizations included in 2000: ILO, FAO, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNDP, WMO, WINROCK, IPALAC, the Chilean Ministry of Education, CAIPE (China) and others.

Meeting of the Latin American Shalom Club Presidents in Quito, Ecuador
      Shalom Clubs

MASHAV maintains contact with former course participants through its network of Shalom Clubs. These clubs serve as a forum for MASHAV alumni to participate in professional and social activities relating to their field of specialization. Members are invited to attend local lectures by skilled experts, to exchange ideas on and to organize technical cooperation and humanitarian assistance as well as holding cultural functions. Members of the Shalom Clubs play an integral role in determining the focus and scope of programming.

Today, there are over 70 Shalom Clubs in partner countries' capital cities and many more in other locales.

MASHAV publishes Shalom Magazine for Alumni of Israel Training Courses. The magazine is published 3 times a year in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian. It is sent directly to all former MASHAV course participants. Shalom Magazine also appears in an Internet edition on the Israeli Foreign Ministry website.

Among the highlights of this year's activities:

  • Shalom Clubs were inaugurated in Mali, Moldova and Shanghai, China.

  • The Senegal Shalom Club, together with Israeli Embassy staff, organized activities to reconstruct four schools in the Dakar area damaged by exceptionally heavy rains.

  • The Nepal Shalom Club established a Garden of Peace, in cooperation with the City of Metropolitan Kathmandu.

  • The second meeting of the Latin American Shalom Club Presidents took place in Quito, Ecuador. Over 40 representatives from 17 Latin American countries participated.
