Jordan
A special course on "Education for Peace" was offered for 24 Jordanian participants from a wide political-social background, at the Adam College, in the Jerusalem Forest. The participants showed great openness, presenting new and interesting views.
Turkey
An agreement was signed between the Turkish company BN Ltd. Sti. and MASHAV for the construction of a community center, renovation of existing housing units and general maintenance, at the Israeli-built village in Adapazari.
Malaysia
The International Congress of the World Bank, Global Knowledge, took place in Kuala Lumpur. The congress focused on the development of knowledge transfer to developing countries, and tried to outline ideas and initiatives of cooperation between the governmental, NGOs and private sectors to achieve this goal. Michael Arbel, Director of MASHAV's Training Division, participated in the congress.
Rwanda
Haim Divon, Deputy Director General of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of MASHAV, visited the northern part of the country and met with Rwandan officials. The purpose of this working tour was to finalize plans for the establishment in the area of a demonstration farm to serve as a model for the rehabilitation of Rwandan refugees.
Palestinian Authority
Jericho
The sixth meeting of MASHAV's Regional Agricultural Project Committee took place in Jericho in February 2000, with the participation of delegates from Denmark, Israel, Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. The project is based on joint activities for the development of the agricultural sector at a regional level.
Khan Yunis
Within the framework of Palestinian-Israeli cooperation MASHAV assists professional advancement of the Intensive Care Unit staff in the El Amal Medical Center in Khan Yunis. MASHAV trained medical staff at Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon to apply up-to-date knowledge in this field.
Ecuador and Peru
At the Donors Meeting of the International Development Bank in New Orleans in March, 2000, Michael Arbel, Director of MASHAV's Training Division, expressed Israel's interest in the Peru-Ecuador Border's Region Development Project. He said: "Israel is prepared to undertake technical cooperation in those spheres in which it has professional and developmental strengths, on a co-financing basis with other donors who may be interested in working together. MASHAV is committed to offering its expertise and training for those involved in human development and capacity building, development of irrigation, safe water provision and family health care, both in its international training program conducted in Israel, as well as in tailor-made training programs in Peru/Ecuador for cross-border welfare development."
Mauritania
Dr. Yossi Baratz, senior advisor to MASHAV, reports that a cancer unit is a project of cooperation between Israel and Mauritania. Its aim is the development of the discipline of diagnosis and treatment of cancers in Mauritania. During 1999 a histopathological laboratory, the basic element for diagnosing neoplastic diseases, was equipped and opened in Nouakchott. During the year 2000 MASHAV is working to equip, open and train medical staff for the diagnostic unit within this project. According to the plan the project will come to fruition in 2001 with the establishment of the treatment unit.
