MASHAV projects seek primarily to advance the aim of capacity building in areas in which Israel has a competitive advantage. Our main project focus is on agricultural pilot projects involving demonstration, training and research and development. Attention is given not only to agricultural techniques but also to management, marketing and administration. Many of these projects are aimed at the grassroots, providing extensive training and assistance to populations throughout the geographical area of the project. In addition, in 2001, MASHAV completed a number of small-scale turn-key infrastructure projects in the field of health.

The guiding principles of MASHAV projects are sustainability and replicability. These aims are achieved by the following means:

  • Every MASHAV project is accompanied by extensive capacity-building and training activities both in Israel and on the project site.

  • MASHAV is committed to long-term follow-up activities in all its projects, including the posting of long-term expert consultants at project sites.

  • Project technologies are carefully selected to suit the needs and capacities of the local populations. Similarly, methodologies taught are designed to be easily replicable by individuals or small collectives.

  • MASHAV projects are designed in cooperation with host countries. Maximum flexibility is maintained in order to address the specific needs of the countries.

MASHAV aspires to integrated projects linking income generation activities with the improvement of education and social services. Projects are administered with the aid of long-term and short-term consultants dispatched to partner countries. Long-term consultants accompany demonstration projects for 2 year periods with the option of extension. Short-term consultants, working in partner countries, provide rapid, specific advisory services, assistance in project implementation and support to Israeli long-term project consultants. For full details of existing projects, see Country Reports.
