Wherever we live and whatever our beliefs, whether we pray to a Higher Authority or wish passionately, in these tragically troubled times, we colleagues of MASHAV work at cooperation and development, large and small.
I share with you a recently-received poem sent by a friend who wished me blessings for the Jewish New Year of strength and courage combined with humility before the Creator, good health, common decency, common sense, harmony and joy from ourselves and to and from each other. I wish you all the same.
We Cannot Merely Pray to God
by Rabbi Jack Riemer
We cannot merely pray to God
To end starvation,
For He has already given us the resources
With which to feed the entire world,
If only we would use them wisely.
We cannot merely pray to God
To root out prejudice,
For He has already given us eyes
With which to see the good in all men,
If only we would use them wisely.
We cannot merely pray to God
To end despair,
For He has already given us the power
To clear away slums and to give hop,
If only we would use our power wisely.
We cannot pray to God
To end disease,
For He has already given us great minds
With which to search out cures and healing,
If only we would use them constructively.
Therefore we pray to God
For strength, determination and will power
To do instead of just to pray,
To become instead of merely to wish.
Amen!
Your Editor,
Ms. Joan Hooper
