Trilateral Program for Agricultural Development
(Communicated by the Israel Foreign Ministry)
February 26, 1997
The governments of Israel, Denmark and Egypt have been involved in an
exciting trilateral program, since 1993, dedicated to the improvement the
agricultural sector in the Middle East. This program, implemented by
MASHAV, in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture, and
partially underwritten by DANIDA - the Danish International Development
Agency, has so far trained almost 2,000 Egyptian agricultural specialists
and farmers. Training has taken place within a wide variety of frameworks
ranging from on site "spot courses" in Egypt" to longer term seminars held
in Israel.
In light of the success of this program DANIDA decided, after consultation
with the various authorities involved, to expand the program's scope to
now include both Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. To this end Denmark
has agreed to budget $2.5 million for the biennum 1999-2000 in order to
expand these activities.
1998 will be dedicated to planning the proposed expansion. A major
innovation has been the designation of two specific agents (either
countries or the PA) to take the lead on various projects. Among the
projects envisaged are:
- Sheep Management - utilization of agricultural waste as feed (Egypt -
Jordan).
- Sheep Management - improvement of milk and meat yields (Jordan -
Egypt).
- Sheep Management - computerization (Israel - Egypt).
- Diagnosis of Veterinary Diseases - (PA - Israel).
- Land and Water Resource Management - (Jordan - Israel).
- Arid Land Agriculture - (PA - Jordan).
- Produce Management and Marketing - (Israel - Egypt).
- Women's Role in Agriculture - (Egypt - PA).
In the course of March 1998 two meetings are planned to take place in
Amman (Produce Management and Marketing) and Ramallah (Women's Role in
Agriculture). May 1998 will see the convening of a regional conference,
under the auspices of DANIDA, and with the participation of Danish
experts, in order to initiate and explore research projects which are to
be proposed to the relevant bodies.
