Feb 15, 2002 - St.-Sgt. Lee Nahman Akunis, 20, of Holon, was shot and killed by gunmen on Friday night at a roadblock north of Ramallah.

At around 7:30 P.M. on Friday evening several Palestinians approached an IDF checkpoint near Surda village in the West Bank, and one opened fire at Akunis from close range. He was fatally wounded, and died before Magen David Adom medics arrived.

Lee was the oldest in his family, and grew up in Holon with his younger sister and two brothers. The family later moved to Sweden, where Vivika, the mother had been born. After his parents' divorce, Lee decided to return to Israel with his father in order to complete his high school studies here and to serve in the army. He graduated in June 2000 from the Sirkin high school in Holon, majoring in tourism.

Lee last visited his mother and family in Sweden last summer.

St.-Sgt. Lee Nahman Akunis was buried in Holon. He is survived by his parents, Moshe and Vivika, his sister Maya, and his brothers Tom, Ron and Bar.
