St-Sgt Liat Ben-Ami

Oct 21, 2002 - St.-Sgt. Liat Ben-Ami, 20, a border policewoman from Haifa, was one of 14 persons killed when a bus was blown up in a suicide attack by a terrorist driving an explosives-laden jeep near the Karkur junction.

Ben-Ami had boarded the No. 841 Egged bus at the stop adjacent to the Border Police Memorial in Wadi Ara, where she served with two others killed in the attack, St.-Sgt. Aiman Sharuf and Sgt. Esther Pisahov. She was 16 months into her military service. Having passed a squad leader's course with honors, she spent time on active service before transferring two months ago to become a guide at the Border Police memorial site at the Barkai junction. While serving in a combat unit along the Green Line she participated in patrols in the Jenin region. "When she was in dangerous places nothing happened to her," said Kobi Levi, a family friend. "And just now, she gets killed on her way home."

St.-Sgt. Liat Ben-Ami was buried in the military section of the Neve David Cemetery in Haifa. She is survived by her parents, Mordechai and Shoshana, an older brother, who is in the army, and a 17-year-old sister, Adva.
