Aharon Obadyan

July 2, 2001 - Aharon Obadyan, 41, of Zichron Ya'akov was shot and killed near Baka a-Sharkia, north of the West Bank city of Tulkarem and close to the 1967 Green Line border, after shopping at the local market.

Aharon Obadyan, a father of four, who had been shopping in the local market, was shot from close range. His body was found adjacent to his vehicle. Shots were fired at Obadyan approximately 50 meters west of the roadblock between Baka a-Sharkia and Baka al Garbiyah, which is inside Israel.

Obadyan worked as a kashrut supervisor at pickling plants in several nearby Israeli Arab towns, and would often shop for produce at the open market located between Baka al Garbiyah and Baka a-Sharkia.

He was also a volunteer in the Zichron Ya'akov branch of the ultra-Orthodox organization "Hatzala" ("rescue") which helped out in medical and other emergencies. Obadyan was on-call 24 hours a day, rendering assistance to Jews and Arabs alike.

Aharon Obadyan was buried in Zichron Ya'akov. He is survived by his wife, Irit, and their two sons and two daughters, aged 10 to 15.
