Dr. Yigal Goldstein
Sept 9, 2001 - Dr. Yigal Goldstein, 47, of Jerusalem was killed in a suicide bombing near the Nahariya train station in northern Israel.
Yigal Goldstein was a successful landscape architect. He traveled to Nahariya on Sunday morning to work on a project in the nearby town of Shlomi together with his relative by marriage, Morel Derfler, a professional photographer.
A terrorist carrying a bomb waited near the train station in Nahariya until the train arrived from Tel-Aviv. As the passengers were exiting the station, he detonated the bomb. Yigal Goldsetin and Morel Derfler were two of the three people killed in the explosion, in which some 90 were injured.
Yigal Goldstein was born in Nahariya. He studied architecture at Carlton University in Ottawa, Canada. He began his career as an architect in Israel 19 years ago in Tel-Aviv, and moved to Jerusalem a year later. In 1994 he opened his own firm, working mostly on public projects.
Family friends told reporters, "He was a wonderful man with distinctive qualities, a good friend, a dedicated husband and father, and an excellent professional." He was a firm believer in peace and co-existence with the Palestinians.
Dr. Yigal Goldstein was buried in Kibbutz Nahshon. He leaves behind a wife, Silvia, a son and two daughters, aged 5, 15, and 16.
