Lt.Col. Yehuda Edri

June 14, 2001 - Lt.Col. Yehuda Edri, 45, of Ma'ale Adumim
was killed by a Palestinian informant for Israeli intelligence in a shooting attack on the Bethlehem bypass tunnel road connecting the Gush Etzion bloc with Jerusalem.
Lieutenant Colonel Yehuda Edri was the Palestinian informant's handler and had arranged to meet him on the Tunnel Road south of Jerusalem, which connects the Gush Etzion settlement bloc with the capital.
Edri arrived at the meeting place with two security guards from his unit. The Palestinian approached the car and shot at Edri and the security guards from close range. Edri, shot in the head, died at the scene. One security guard sustained medium-to-serious injuries. The second security guard chased the Palestinian informant and killed him.
Army sources said Edri was an experienced intelligence officer, and had been in contact with the Palestinian informant for several months. The Al-Jezira television station in Qatar reported that the Palestinian attacker was Hasan Abu Sa'ireh, a member of Fatah from a refugee camp near Bethlehem.
Edri had worked hard in the past months to obtain intelligence information that would help prevent terrorist attacks against Israelis.
Yehuda Edri is survived by his wife and six children - his oldest son recently completed officer training.
Lt.Col. Yehuda Edri was buried at the Mt. Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem.
