The car exploded near the gasoline tank of the bus, causing it to burst into flames. Most of the casualties were soldiers who were on their way to their bases. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.

He graduated from the Amal high school for science and art in Hadera and also completed a degree in electronic engineering. He His friends describe him as fun-loving and as someone who loved to travel. He would always go out shopping and spend time with friends during his furloughs from the army. Prior to his conscription, Dotan had been a volunteer for the Magen David Adom.
