Mónica Patricia Terán Navarrete
Nov 19, 2003 - Mónica Patricia Terán Navarrete, 33, of Ecuador was killed when a terrorist entered the Israel-Jordan border crossing terminal north of Eilat from the Jordanian side and opened fire. The terrorist was killed by Israeli security guards.
Patricia Terán Navarrete, who lived in the capital city of Quito, was an employee of the World Development Bank. She was part of a group of 29 pilgrims on a visit to the Holy Land, under the leadership of their pastor, Gustavo Molina, of the Evangelical Church in Quito. Patricia was traveling with her best friend, Silvia Romero. They had been planning the trip for a year, saving up money.
The group had completed its visit to the Nabatean city of Petra in Jordan and were at the border crossing into Israel when the terrorist opened fire. Patricia was mortally wounded in the head and died in hospital. The pastor and three other members of the group were lightly injured.
Patricia was an only child, well-liked by all who knew her. Her father, Carlos Terán, awaiting the arrival of her body, asked that the family's sorrow be respected.
Mónica Patricia Terán Navarrete was flown home for burial in Quito. She was laid to rest in the Monte Olivo cemetery. She is survived by her parents, Carlos Marcelo Terán Andrade and Martha Navarrete Rodríguez, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
