Assaf Greenwald
Oct 7, 2004 - Assaf Greenwald, 27, of Ramat Gan was killed in the terror bombing at the Hilton Hotel in Taba - one of two tourist sites in Sinai hit the same night.
At around 22:00, a blast ripped through the Hilton Hotel in the resort town of Taba, near the border with Israel. The powerful blast was caused by car bomb which exploded at the entrance to the hotel, containing an estimated 250-300 kg of explosives, causing the collapse of part of the hotel. At about 23:30, two additional explosions occurred in the camping area of of Ras a-Satan, located about 45 kilometers south.
Assaf Greenwald had been vacationing near Nueiba in Sinai with two friends when their beach hut burned down, along with most of their belongings. Just an hour before the bombings, Assaf asked his parents, who were at an Eilat hotel, to meet him at the Taba border crossing. The returning vacationers were held up because their passports were partially burned. Assaf and Rotem Moriah decided to go the bathroom at nearby Taba Hilton and were killed in the blast.
Assaf graduated from the Telem High School and served in the air force as an airplane technician. He had recently been employed as manager of the advertising department of the entertainment weekly "Rating." Assaf played the guitar and was a member of the Captain Ramsay band, with which he appeared in various nightclubs in Tel Aviv.
Assaf Greenwald was buried in the Kiryat Shaul cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Ya'akov and Edna, and his brothers, Eran and Gilad.
