Sgt. Adaron Amar

May 11, 2004 - Sgt. Adaron Amar, 20, of Eilat was killed with five other soldiers when Palestinian gunmen detonated a mine under their armored personal carrier in the Gaza Strip.

Amar and his Givati Brigade comrades were returning from an operation in the Zeitun neighborhood of Gaza City to destroy weapons factories when their APC was hit. The blast detonated left-over explosives the engineering unit was transporting, destroying the APC and killing the soldiers instantly.

Adaron graduated from Eilat's Allon High School, where he was first in his class. He was determined to serve in an elite unit in the army and served for half a year in the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit before joining the combat engineering unit of the Givati Brigade.

A friend related: "He should have gone on to do important things. He loved the army, passed all the examinations, and was happy to be in the special unit where he served." Said a teacher from Amar's high school: "They just chose to kill the very best."

Sgt. Adaron Amar was buried at Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem. He is survived by his parents, Danny and Amalia, a sister, Gali, 17, and twin brothers, Shahar and Zohar,13.
