Aug 19, 2006 - St.-Sgt. Ro'i Farjoun, 21, of Yehud was killed when a terrorist opened fire at the Bekaot checkpoint in the Jordan Valley. The Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
Ro'i Farjoun, of the 97th Battalion of the Nahal Haredi - a special unit set up to enable Orthodox men to serve in the army - was stationed at the Bekaot checkpoint in the northern Jordan Valley. The terrorist, identified as Muhammed Ban-Yuda, 22, from the village of Tamun near Jenin, arrived at the checkpoint in a car, drew his gun and shot the soldier several times at short range. The gunman was killed by IDF forces.
Ro'i was one of one of quadruplets - three boys and a girl. Their father was killed in a work accident when they were two, and their mother Tamar raised the four children alone. All four attended the religious Ma'ala High School in Yehud. Ro'i went on to study at the military preparatory academy in Beit El before joining the Nahal Haredi. His two brothers are also currently serving in the IDF, and their sister served in the Military Police.
Ro'i's uncle, David Farjoun, relates that whenever people would ask Ro'i what he wanted to be, he would reply, "I want to be a father." His fellow soldiers described him as a dominant figure, well-liked by all, who was to have gone on to train as an officer.
St.-Sgt. Ro'i Farjoun was buried in the military section of the cemetery in Yehud. He is survived by his mother Tamar, his brothers Eliran and Guy, and sister Mor.
