Jan 29, 2007 - Israel Zamalloa, 25, was one of three people killed in a suicide bombing in a bakery in the southern city of Eilat. The Islamic Jihad and the Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
Israel Zamalloa, known to all as Izzy, was a resident of Eilat and an employee in the Lechamim bakery. Born in Lima, Peru, he moved with his family to Israel in 1984. The family lived in Jerusalem until 1991 and then moved to Miami. In 2001, Zamalloa decided to return to Israel alone, leaving his family behind in South Florida.
Heli Azulai, who works near the bakery, tells of Izzy's cheerful, smiling personality. "We were friends and he was very neighborly," she says.
Friends and family members in Miami described Zamalloa as a lively person who loved living in Israel. He enjoyed soccer and traveled frequently throughout Europe.
At the family's request, the body of Israel Zamalloa was flown to Florida for burial. He is survived by his parents, Walter and Jeanette, and a younger sister, Heidy, who reside in North Miami.
