Oct 17, 2007 – St.-Sgt. Ben Kubany, 20, of Hadera, was killed in an exchange of fire with terrorists during IDF activity targeting the terror infrastructure near Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
Staff Sergeant Kubany, from the Golani infantry brigade, was struck by a sniper's bullet while his unit was maneuvering between Palestinian homes on the outskirts of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. He was critically wounded and succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.
Upon enlisting in the army, Kubany stated his wish to be drafted into the Golani brigade. He was turned down, and then refused to leave the recruitment office until his life-long dream to join the brigade came true. He was jailed for a few days, then released from the army altogether. Later, he enlisted again, and this time he was placed in his beloved Golani infantry brigade, in which he met his death. He was awarded the rank of staff sergeant posthumously.
Although serving in the army, Ben helped support his family while on leave by working in a butcher shop. His friend Eyal related, "He would come home from the army, take off his uniform, and go straight to work."
St.-Sgt. Ben Kubany was buried at the Hadera military cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Rachamim and Margalit, his 27-year-old married sister Sarit, and his 17-year-old brother Ido.
