Dec 29, 2008 - Hani al-Mahdi, 27, of Aroar, a Beduin settlement in the Negev was killed when a Grad-type missile fired from Gaza exploded at a construction site in Ashkelon. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.

An air raid siren was sounded in the seaside city just before 9:30 am, followed by an explosion which rocked many areas across Ashkelon. One missile exploded at a construction site, killing Hani al-Mahdi and wounding 16 other workers.

Hani would work wherever he could earn money to help support his family, a relative said. Despite the danger, he went back to work in Ashkelon on Monday morning and was killed.

Hani al-Mahdi is survived by his parents and 14 brothers and sisters.
