Mar 1, 2008 - St.-Sgt. Doron Asulin, 20, of Beersheba was one of two soldiers killed in an exchange of fire with Hamas terrorists during an IDF anti-terror operation in northern Gaza.
Doron Asulin, of the IDF Givati Brigade was taking part in an IDF operation near the Jabaliya refugee camp aimed at stopping the escalating rocket attacks on the western Negev from the Gaza Strip. Asulin and Eran Dan-Gur were killed in the exchange of fire; the gunmen reportedly fired mortar shells, antitank and RPG missiles at the soldiers.
Doron's father, Meir Asulin, described his son as being enthralled with the army and not afraid of anything. "I spoke with Doron on Friday. He told me he was going on a tour of the outlying regions and would probably be entering Gaza the next day [Saturday]. I told him, 'Doron, take care of yourself.' He said to me, 'Dad, it will be all right.' He was not afraid."
Doron's father told that his son served a year and a half in basic training until he found his niche in the army. Initially, in March of 2006, he was recruited to become a naval officer, but was dissatisfied with the prospects of his service. He transferred to the Duvdevan unit, and from there to the Givati Brigade.
"Before he went into Gaza he was ready for the mission," said Meir. "He told me, "Dad, we need to get in there; we can't go on like this."
Asulin grew up in Be'er Sheva and studied in the Amit Yeshiva there. His father described him as a karate enthusiast who loved to travel and fish.
St.-Sgt. Doron Asulin was buried in the Be'er Sheva military cemetery. He is survived by his mother and three younger sisters who live in Ashdod, and his father, who lives in Be'er Sheva.
