Jan 24, 2008 - Border Guard Lance Corporal Rami Zuari, 20, of Beersheva was shot and killed at a checkpoint at the northern entrance to Shuafat, north of Jerusalem.
The checkpoint at which the shooting took place served as a pedestrian crossing point between the refugee camp and the Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood of Jerusalem. At the time of the shooting, the checkpoint was manned by two Border Police officers. The terrorists approached the entrance to Shuafat on foot, opened fire, killing Rami Zuari, nicknamed "Rambo", and wounding the female officer. The Battalions of Struggle and Return, a previously anonymous offshoot of Fatah's Aksa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
Rami had been serving in the Border Police since March 2007. "Rami was fanatic about Magav (the Border Police)," father Shlomo said of his son, who hoped to one day become an officer in the force. "He planned to undergo a squad commander course and then an officer course." Rami's favorite hobbies were computers and music, and when he would come home on leave after two weeks on duty, he would close himself in his room and devote himself to both.
Lance Corporal Rami Zuari was buried in the military cemetery in Beersheba. He is survived by his parents and four siblings.
