Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Avigdor Liberman, wrote to his Canadian counterpart, Lawrence Cannon, today (29 July), in order to express Israel's "deep satisfaction and appreciation" in the light of new sanctions which the Government of Canada has imposed upon Iran.

Minister Liberman noted that the prohibition on new investments in Iran's energy sector sends "a clear message that Iran will not be allowed to expand its economic base so long as it insists upon pursuing its nuclear agenda."

The Minister also cited the sanctions imposed on Iranian financial institutions as necessary to deprive Iran of the resources needed to continue its nuclear project. The Minister further observed that targeting the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps sends a message that there is no personal immunity for those who endanger global security.

The Minister expressed his hope that Canada's steadfastness would serve to   inspire likeminded states to take action.
