Israel's response to the IAEA resolution regarding Iran

27 Nov 2009

The international community has realized that Iran’s nuclear program is becoming a significant and urgent threat to world peace.

(Communicated by the MFA Spokesperson)

Israel commends the resolution today (Friday, 27 November 2009) by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding Iran. This is the first such resolution in over three years that the agency has adopted regarding Iran.

The importance of the resolution is in its determination that Iran is continuing to defy the resolutions of both the Security Council and the IAEA Board of Governors, as well as its expression of concern over the fact that Iran is building its enrichment facility in Qom in secret, in breach of the safeguards agreements to which it is obligated. The demand to immediately halt the construction of this facility is of extreme importance.

The fact that the resolution was approved by a large majority confirms that the international community has realized that Iran’s nuclear program, which has been advanced by employing methods of concealment and deception, is becoming a significant and urgent threat to world peace.

The international community, by means of its authorized institutions and their members, must ensure that this resolution has practical implications by determining binding schedules for its implementation and weighty sanctions against Iran if this resolution is violated as well.
