Opera Auschwitz 44: An Opera
Text and music: Alexander Szinberger
Alexander Szinberger
The short opera "Auschwitz 44 - A Tragic Scene", by Israeli composer Alexander Szinberger, is a 10 minute piece, depicting a horrific scene: In the Auschwitz German death camp in 1944, a Jewish mother is forced by a Nazi soldier to decide which one of her two daughters will live and who will die.

The composer, Professor Alexander Szinberger, is himself a Holocaust survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, who lives in Israel. Before World War II he held a teaching position at the prestigious Academy of Music in Cluj-Npoca, Romania. He received the Trevi Prize in Rome in 1969. This opera is performed by the Romanian National Opera and has been performed on several occasions in Israel, including at the Presidents residence in Jerusalem on Holocaust Day of 1982.
