Israel and US Sign Agreement regarding Extradition to the ICC

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
Jerusalem, 4 August 2002

Today (August 4), Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shimon Peres, and US Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, John Bolton, signed an Agreement regarding the Surrender of Persons to the International Criminal Court (ICC), in the Hague.

According to the agreement, each of the states will neither extradite, transfer or surrender any citizens of the other state to the Court, or to a third country which may surrender them to the Court.

It should be noted that this agreement is consistent with Article 98 of the ICC's Statute which establishes, among other things, that a state may refuse to surrender an individual to the Court if such a surrender is inconsistent with the international obligations of the surrendering state.
