Vice Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni will officially open the Global Forum for Combating Anti-Semitism in the presence of 160 participants from Israel and around the world: heads of Jewish communities and major Jewish organizations, scholars and public personalities who are actively engaged in the struggle against anti-Semitism. The Global Forum for Combating Anti-Semitism will convene with an address by the Foreign Minister on Feb 11th at 14:00 in the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem.
The Global Forum will formulate strategies for dealing with the many aspects of anti-Semitism which plague public and political life. The Forum will focus on practical steps for combating anti-Semitism by legal means, through education and media, and will pay particular attention to the dilemmas posed by anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim world.
The current wave of anti-Semitism in Europe and in the Arab and Muslim world, which culminated in the Holocaust denial conference held recently in Teheran, demonstrates the need for coordinated action. The fact that we are witnessing a "new anti-Semitism" which seeks to undermine the legitimacy of Israel and disguises hatred of the Jewish people by means of hatred towards the Jewish state requires that we heighten awareness and seek to be proactive.
During the course of the Global Forum, seven working groups will convene in order to develop appropriate strategies for the challenges before us. Some topics which will be addresses in the working groups are:
• Responding to Islamic radicalism, the radical left and discriminatory NGO's
• Media action: Dealing with hate speech and internet incitement.
• Holocaust remembrance: The dilemma of divergent narratives in the former Soviet Union
• Ensuring implementation of the Berlin and Cordoba principles
• Building coalitions on the political, NGO and interfaith levels
• Legislation and enforcement against Holocaust denial and hate crimes
• Anti-Semitism in the academic world
The Israel Foreign Ministry's Division for World Jewish and Inter-Religious Affairs and the Department for Combating Anti-Semitism are convening the Global Forum under the auspices of the Foreign Minister as part of the many initiatives against anti-Semitism led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
